Creating Cultural Swag In Our Youth

Kiss the Clouds

February 22, 2011

As my lovely daughter speaks with a bold quiet confidence”Daddy words can’t describe how beautiful this scenery is!”  I witnessed transformation, beauty, purpose, and freedom today all in our annual trip up to Big Bear Mountain in Big Bear, California.  As we traveled up the mountain on a clear sunny President’s Day, we all were inspired by the beauty of nature.  The radio disappeared, the normal arguing between my children vanished, and something powerful entered into our 2000 Mazda Mini-van MP3.  We became fully immersed in nature.  We were one with nature, God, and the spirit of our ancestors.  As we twisted and turned up windy narrow roads, the scenery became peaceful, our bond stronger.  On these roadtrips I make my son Idris navigation engineer, which means he is responsible for reading the directions and getting us to the proper destination. However, today we created new rites-ritual for are roadtrips. I asked Idris if he would write down each city as we drove up the mountain, the population, and the elevation of each city.  He said in his angelic voice” Daddy, 3,000, 4,000, 5,oo0 feet in the air lets kiss the clouds as we see Rim Forest, Sky Forest, Arrowbear, Running Springs, and 7,000 feet leads us right up to Big Bear!”  Power, creativity, and spiritual flow allowed me to drive and my kids to let nature and life run wildy through them like a boar!  Naimah and Idris started to articulate this amazing poetry.  I felt that something invisible and hidden became the driving force and inspiration of our journey, something greater and extravagant moved through my offspring!  Listen to these lines from Naimah and Idris as they bear witness to the power that radiates, emanates, and shines through children;  “The snow is like a perfect sheet of light!”  “Clouds are like fluffy beds of heaven.” “Trees are leaking snow like running noses.”  “Trees are being cut down like casualties of war.”  “The hawk is gliding through the deep blue sea of clouds.”  “The trees remind me of my ancestors as if they were with me at this very moment.”  “Look as you see a tractor represent life, wheels moving fast, while life moves slow.”  “The trees look like a band of nature.”  “The snow is an icy cover laid down by our ancestors for us to keep warm with a frozen love.”   “The snow is a bed I want to lay in, the snow is a mattress I want to play in, the sky is the sea that I want to swim in.” This poetry session lasted for an hour until they became restless and bored!  We arrived at our sledding destination. Sledding, falling, laughing and being one with the other community of sledders.  The time was great and we had lots of fun.  We headed back after two hours of sledding and right before we descended back to earth Naimah and Idris joined souls for one last quote”As the snow ends, the journey ends, and a new day has come.”

Make It Move!

Peace!
